Peter Arnett, correspondent for NBC and National Geographic Explorer, has given an interview with state-run Iraqi TV. In the interview, aired by stations throughout the Moslem world, Arnett said the American-led coalition's first war plan had failed because of Iraq's resistance.
Arnett said there is a growing sense of nationalism and resistance to what the U.S. and Britain are doing. "Clearly, the American war plans misjudged the determination of the Iraqi forces," he said. He said that in the U.S. there is a growing opposition to the war and a growing challenge to President Bush about the war's conduct.
"Our reports about civilian casualties here, about the resistance of the Iraqi forces, are going back to the United States," he said. "It (his reporting) helps those who oppose the war when you challenge the policy to develop their arguments."
He said the Iraqi forces had been kind to him and allowed him free access. All this while the Iraq regime was kicking out other journalists or holding them captive.
He said the Bush administration would not listen to him. "But me, and others who felt the same way were not listened to by the Bush administration," he said.
Both NBC and National Geographic Explorer fired Arnett who apologized for what he called a "misjudgment," but he did not retract anything he said. "I want to apologize to the American people for clearly making a misjudgment," he said. His interview will do immeasurable harm in Muslim countries.
The Associated Press notes that during Arnett's coverage of the Gulf War for CNN in 1991, the Bush Administration of that day suggested Arnett had become a conveyor of propaganda.
In another recent interview Arnett stated that the Iraqis were allowing him to stay in Baghdad because they respect him.
A Petition To Revoke The Passport
Of Journalist Peter Arnett
To President George W. Bush:
Since Peter Arnett has elected to become the mouthpiece for the Iraqi regime; I ask that you revoke his passport and let him remain in Iraq. Despite the fact that he has apologized for what he calls a "misjudgment," his comments have not been retracted and are being used in the Moslem world as a tool against the U.S. His comments will make the job of U.S. and British forces much more difficult and possibly cost the lives of coalition forces and innocent Iraqi people.
I ask that you pull his U.S. passport and let him remain in Iraq.
